Echo and Delay

Repeat the sound back with a delay you choose, from a quick slapback to long, fading echoes.

or drop it here

MP3, WAV, M4A, FLAC, OGG, Opus, AIFF, WMA, AMR and the sound of most videos. Files stay on your device.

How it works

  1. Choose an audio file.
  2. Set the delay time, feedback and mix; turn on ping-pong for stereo.
  3. Preview the result.
  4. Export and download.

Delay, feedback and mix

The delay time is the gap between the sound and its first repeat. Under about 120 ms the repeat blends into the sound and sounds like a thickening (a slapback); from 250 ms upwards it is heard as a separate echo. Feedback decides how many repeats follow: each one is that fraction as loud as the one before, so 0 gives a single repeat and 90 percent gives a long fading trail. Mix is the level of the repeats; the original sound always passes through unchanged.

Tempo-synced delays and ping-pong

Instead of milliseconds you can give the delay as a note length at a tempo, for example a dotted eighth at 120 BPM, which is 375 ms. The page shows the resulting time. Ping-pong makes the repeats alternate between the left and right speaker; a mono file becomes stereo. The high-cut filter darkens each repeat a little more, which keeps echoes behind the original instead of competing with it.

Presets and limits

Presets include Slapback, Short echo, Classic echo, Ping-pong, Dub and Long tail. The delay can be 1 to 2000 ms and feedback up to 95 percent. The ring-out after the end of the file is kept, up to 10 seconds, so the last repeats are not cut off. The page shows how long the repeats take to fall by 60 dB.

Questions

What is the difference between echo and reverb?

Echo repeats the sound as distinct copies. Reverb blends thousands of tiny reflections into a smooth wash. Use the reverb tool for a sense of space and this one for repeats.

How do I make a slapback echo?

Use the Slapback preset: a single short repeat around 90 ms with very little feedback.

Why does the file get longer?

The repeats continue after the original ends. They are kept until they are quiet or for 10 seconds, whichever comes first.

Can I sync the delay to a song’s tempo?

Yes: choose Note at a tempo, enter the BPM of the song and a note length. The BPM detector can find the tempo of a file.
