Change Pitch

Transpose a recording up or down, with the tempo kept by default.

or drop it here

MP3, WAV, M4A, FLAC, OGG, Opus, AIFF, WMA, AMR and the sound of most videos. Files stay on your device.

How it works

  1. Choose an audio file.
  2. Set semitones and cents, or use the octave buttons.
  3. Choose whether the tempo is preserved, and preview.
  4. Export and download.

Semitones, cents and octaves

A semitone is one key on a piano; twelve semitones are an octave, which doubles the frequency. Fine tune is in cents (100 cents per semitone) for small corrections, such as matching a recording that is slightly flat. Octave buttons move by 12 semitones. The range is 24 semitones in each direction.

Enter the key the song is in and the page shows the key it will end up in. The key name is the one you provide: the tool does not detect keys here, use the Key Detector for that.

Keeping the tempo, or not

With Preserve tempo on (the default), pitch and speed are separated by a phase-vocoder engine, so the length of the file is exactly the same. The option "Keep the voice character" holds the tone of voices and instruments steadier at larger shifts, at some cost to the naturalness of other material.

With Preserve tempo off, the audio is resampled, so the pitch and the speed change together and the length changes by the same factor. It is exact and has no processing artefacts, but it is the sound of a turntable rather than a transposition.

Quality and limits

Shifts of a few semitones sound natural on most material. Beyond about 6 to 12 semitones, voices start to sound artificial and drums and dense mixes lose clarity. Pitch-shifting a mix shifts everything together; it cannot change one instrument inside it.

Questions

How do I change the key of a song?

Set the number of semitones to move. Up two semitones takes C to D; down three takes C to A. Choose the song key in the optional field to see the result.

How do I make a voice deeper?

Lower the pitch by 2 to 4 semitones and try "Keep the voice character". Large shifts sound artificial.

Will the song get shorter or longer?

Not with Preserve tempo on. With it off, the length changes along with the pitch.

What are cents for?

Cents are hundredths of a semitone. They are used for tuning, for example +14 cents to bring a recording that is flat up to A 440 Hz.
