Audio File Info

Find out what a file really is: codec, bitrate, sample rate, channels and duration.

or drop them here

MP3, WAV, M4A, FLAC, OGG, Opus, AIFF, WMA, AMR and the sound of most videos. Files stay on your device.

How it works

  1. Choose one or more audio files.
  2. Read the table of properties for each file.
  3. Copy the details, or export them as CSV.

What it shows

For each file the table lists the container (WAV, MP4, Ogg and so on), the codec and profile (for example AAC-LC or MPEG 1 Layer 3), the average bitrate, sample rate, bit depth, channels with the usual speaker layout, the precise duration, the size, how many tags the file carries and whether it has cover art. You can check many files at once and copy the table as text or CSV.

Only the file headers are read, and for compressed files the sizes of the packets, to measure the true average bitrate. The audio is never decoded, so even large files are quick.

Bitrate, CBR and VBR

A constant bitrate (CBR) file uses the same number of bits for every second. A variable bitrate (VBR) file spends more on complex passages, so only an average makes sense. The page shows the mode when the file says so: for MP3 it reads the Xing, Info or VBRI header in the first frame. For other formats the mode is not stored in a way that can be read quickly, so only the average bitrate is shown.

Bit depth only applies to uncompressed and lossless audio. For MP3, AAC, Opus and other lossy formats it is shown as not applicable.

Checking a file before you use it

This is the quick way to answer "what sample rate is this?", "is it really 320 kbps?" or "does it have a cover?". A duration marked approximate comes from the header and was not verified against the audio. For channel layouts above stereo the usual order is shown; the file itself may not record which speaker is which.

Questions

How do I check the bitrate of an MP3?

Add the file. The Bitrate column shows the average and, when the file has a Xing or Info header, whether it is CBR or VBR.

Can it tell me if a file is a fake lossless one?

Not from the header. Open the file in the spectrogram viewer: an FLAC made from an MP3 usually has a hard cutoff around 16 kHz.

Why is the duration marked approximate?

Some files only store a duration in a header, and the header can be wrong, for example after a download was cut off. The audio analyzer measures the real length.

Does it work on video files?

Yes, it reads the audio track of common video formats and ignores the picture.
