Mono to Stereo

Make a mono recording play from both speakers or both ears instead of just one.

or drop it here

MP3, WAV, M4A, FLAC, OGG, Opus, AIFF, WMA, AMR and the sound of most videos. Files stay on your device.

How it works

  1. Choose a mono file.
  2. Leave the balance at 0, or move it toward one side.
  3. Preview in both ears.
  4. Export and download.

What it does

A mono file has one channel, and some players put it in only one ear or one speaker. Converting to stereo copies that channel to both the left and right outputs at full level, so it plays from both sides and sounds centred. The two sides are identical, so nothing about the sound changes except where it plays.

This is not a stereo effect: it does not widen the sound or invent a stereo image. It makes a one-channel file work on two-channel systems.

Fixing audio that comes out of one ear

A recording that plays only in the left or right ear is often a stereo file with one silent channel, not a mono file. In that case use the stereo to mono tool with Left only or Right only, which keeps the side that has the audio, and then convert it to stereo here.

Balance

The optional balance control moves the sound toward one side: the far side is turned down and the near side keeps its level. Leave it at zero for equal output. For a pan law, such as constant power, use the pan audio tool.

Questions

Why does my audio only play in one ear?

Usually the other channel is empty. Use stereo to mono with Left only or Right only to keep the side that has sound, then convert the result to stereo.

Does mono to stereo improve the sound?

No. It copies the same signal to both channels. For a sense of space use the reverb tool.

Does it make the file bigger?

Uncompressed files (WAV, AIFF) double in size. Compressed formats grow less, because identical channels compress well.

I have two mono files. Can I combine them into one stereo file?

Not in this tool, which works on one file at a time. Convert each mono file separately.
