Add Reverb

Place a dry recording in a space, from a small room to a cathedral.

or drop it here

MP3, WAV, M4A, FLAC, OGG, Opus, AIFF, WMA, AMR and the sound of most videos. Files stay on your device.

How it works

  1. Choose an audio file.
  2. Pick a space and set decay, pre-delay and mix.
  3. Preview; the reverb tail is kept at the end of the file.
  4. Export and download.

What the settings do

Decay time (RT60) is how long the reverb takes to fall by 60 dB: about 0.4 seconds for a small room, 2 seconds for a hall and 5 or more for a cathedral. Pre-delay is the gap before the first reflection and keeps a voice clear in front of the space. Damping makes the tail darker, like soft walls absorbing treble. Width sets how different the reverb is in the two ears. Mix is the share of reverb in the result.

The presets (Small room, Room, Hall, Cathedral, Plate and Vocal) set all five together.

How it is made

The reverb is synthetic: a pattern of early reflections followed by a smoothly decaying tail, applied by fast convolution. It is not a recording of a real room, so it sounds clean and predictable rather than characterful. A mono file becomes stereo.

The tail after the end of your audio is kept, up to 10 seconds, so the file ends a little later than the original instead of being cut off.

Tips

Use less mix than you think: 15 to 30 percent is plenty for voice. Long decay on busy music turns it to mush, so shorten the decay or raise the pre-delay. Preview renders 12 seconds including the warm-up of the tail, so it sounds as the export will.

Questions

Why is the exported file longer than the original?

The reverb tail keeps ringing after the sound ends. It is kept, up to 10 seconds, so it fades out naturally.

How do I make a voice sound like it is in a hall?

Start with the Hall or Vocal preset, keep the mix around 20 to 30 percent and add 20 to 40 ms of pre-delay.

Can I use a real room response or my own impulse response?

Not in this tool. It generates its own spaces from the settings.

Does reverb on a mono file work?

Yes. The result is stereo, with a different reverb in each ear when the width is above zero.
