Bass Booster
Add weight to thin audio, with protection so the added low end does not clip.
MP3, WAV, M4A, FLAC, OGG, Opus, AIFF, WMA, AMR and the sound of most videos. Files stay on your device.
How it works
- Choose an audio file.
- Choose a preset or set the frequency and amount of boost.
- Listen and check the clipping indicator.
- Export and download.
How the boost works
The bass booster applies a low-shelf filter: everything below the frequency you choose is raised by the amount you choose, and everything above stays as it was. Frequency sets where the lift begins (30 to 300 Hz) and Boost sets how much (up to 18 dB). The chart shows the resulting curve.
The presets pick sensible pairs. Subtle warmth is a gentle lift of the low mids; Deep and Extreme push the sub-bass for speakers and headphones that can reproduce it.
Protection against clipping
Bass carries a lot of energy, so boosting it quickly pushes peaks past full scale. Limiter (the default) holds the result at −1 dBTP and only acts when a peak would exceed it. Lower level turns the whole file down by the amount of the boost, so peaks stay where they were. Off leaves the result as boosted.
The page reads the loudest sample of your file and tells you the highest level the boost could reach. That figure is an upper bound: real peaks usually rise less.
Limits worth knowing
A boost can only amplify bass that is in the recording. If the source has nothing below 60 Hz, boosting 40 Hz does nothing, and laptop and phone speakers cannot play deep bass whatever you do. Very large boosts on small speakers sound distorted because the speaker, not the file, runs out of range.
Lossy formats such as MP3 are encoded once more when you export. WAV and FLAC stay lossless.
Questions
How much bass should I add?
Start with 3 to 6 dB. More than 10 dB rarely sounds good unless the speakers are small or the recording is thin. Use the live preview and compare against the original.
Why does my music sound quieter or distorted after boosting?
Quieter: the Lower level mode and the limiter both trade loudness for safety. Distorted: with protection off, boosted peaks clip, or your speakers cannot reproduce the added low end.
What is the difference between this and the equalizer?
The bass booster is one shelf with clipping protection built in. The equalizer has ten separate bands for shaping the whole tone.
Does it work on MP3 files?
Yes. The MP3 is decoded, boosted and encoded again. For the best quality, export WAV or FLAC, or an MP3 at a high bitrate.
