Ringtone Maker

Choose the part of a song you want to hear when the phone rings; the length limits are built in.

or drop it here

MP3, WAV, M4A, FLAC, OGG, Opus, AIFF, WMA, AMR and the sound of most videos. Files stay on your device.

How it works

  1. Choose the song.
  2. Pick iPhone (M4R, up to 40 seconds) or Android (MP3).
  3. Select the section and set the fades.
  4. Download the ringtone, then add it to your phone.

Make a ringtone in four steps

Open a song or any audio file, choose iPhone or Android, drag on the waveform to pick the part you want, and download. The fades are preset to half a second in and one and a half seconds out, so the tone starts cleanly and does not stop abruptly; change them in the fade fields.

iPhone ringtones are M4R files (AAC) and iOS accepts up to 40 seconds, so the selection is limited to 40 seconds. Android takes an MP3 of any reasonable length; the page offers MP3 and M4A.

Put the ringtone on an iPhone

iOS has no direct way to install a downloaded M4R from the browser, so it goes through a computer:

  • On a Mac, connect the iPhone, open it in Finder, and drag the .m4r file onto the General tab (or onto the iPhone in the sidebar). On Windows, drag it onto your iPhone in the Apple Devices app, or into iTunes.
  • On the iPhone, open Settings, Sounds and Haptics, Ringtone, and choose the new tone from the top of the list.
  • For a contact, open the contact, Edit, Ringtone.

Put the ringtone on an Android phone

Save the file to your phone, then open Settings, Sound, Phone ringtone, and use Add ringtone or choose the file. If your phone does not offer that, copy the file into the Ringtones folder of the phone storage (Notifications for notification sounds, Alarms for alarm tones) and it will appear in the list.

Choosing a good section

Pick the part that is recognisable from the first second: ringtones are heard in short bursts. Vocals that start in the middle of a word sound awkward, so zoom in and cut at a gap. Use Play selection with Loop on to hear how it repeats.

Questions

What is the maximum length for an iPhone ringtone?

iOS accepts ringtones up to 40 seconds. The iPhone option limits the selection to 40 seconds.

What is an M4R file?

It is an AAC audio file with the .m4r extension, which is what iPhones use for ringtones. It is the same as an M4A with a different extension.

Can I use a song I bought?

Songs protected by DRM cannot be opened. Ordinary MP3, M4A and similar files you own work, and nothing is uploaded.

Can I make a notification or alarm sound?

Yes. Choose a short section and use the Android option, then pick it as the notification or alarm sound in Settings.
