Add Silence to Audio

Pad a recording with silence where you need it.

or drop it here

MP3, WAV, M4A, FLAC, OGG, Opus, AIFF, WMA, AMR and the sound of most videos. Files stay on your device.

How it works

  1. Choose an audio file.
  2. Set the silence at the start, at the end, or at a specific time.
  3. Check the new total length.
  4. Export and download.

Where silence can go

Add silence at the start, at the end, or insert it at any time position, by entering the lengths in seconds. You can combine all three, and the page shows the new total length. To insert in the middle, type the time in the position field. The silence is digital silence, made of zero samples.

The most that can be added in one go is six hours.

Typical uses

  • A lead-in so a clip does not start the moment a player begins.
  • A pause at the end of a track before the next one.
  • A gap in the middle of a recording, for example between a question and an answer.
  • Padding a sound to an exact length by adding silence at the end.

Quality

The original audio is not altered. Lossy formats are encoded once on export, so choose WAV or FLAC as the output for a lossless result.

Questions

Can I add silence at more than one place?

Use the start, end and one inserted position together. For more insertions, run the tool again on the result.

Does adding silence change the audio?

No. The sound is copied as it is and the silence is added around or inside it.

How do I add silence to a specific length?

Subtract the file length from the length you want and enter the difference as silence at the end. The page shows the resulting total.

Is the file uploaded?

No. Everything stays in your browser.
