Fade In and Fade Out

Smooth the start and end of a clip, and choose how the fade curves.

or drop it here

MP3, WAV, M4A, FLAC, OGG, Opus, AIFF, WMA, AMR and the sound of most videos. Files stay on your device.

How it works

  1. Choose an audio file.
  2. Set the fade-in and fade-out lengths and pick a curve.
  3. Preview the fades on the waveform.
  4. Export and download.

Fade in, fade out or both

A fade changes the volume gradually. A fade in starts silent and rises to full volume over the length you choose; a fade out falls to silence over the last seconds of the file. Both can be applied together, and the curve shows exactly how the volume changes over the file.

Short fades of 5 to 20 milliseconds remove the click you hear when a clip starts or stops in the middle of a waveform.

Choosing a curve

The shape changes how natural the fade sounds.

  • Linear: constant change in amplitude, a neutral default.
  • Exponential: stays quiet for longer then rises quickly; a gentle start.
  • Logarithmic: rises quickly then settles; the ending of a fade out is gentle.
  • S-curve: slow at both ends, faster in the middle; smooth for long fades.
  • Equal power: keeps perceived loudness even, the usual choice for crossfades between two clips.

Notes

The fade-out is measured from the end of the file, so trim the file first if you want it to fade at a different point. Preview plays 10 seconds from the playhead; move the playhead near the end to hear a fade out.

Questions

How long should a fade out be?

Two to five seconds suits most songs. Speech and short clips usually need under a second.

Can I fade just a part of the file?

Trim the part first (or split the file), apply the fade, then merge it back.

Which curve sounds most natural?

For music endings, logarithmic or S-curve fades tend to sound natural. Use equal power when blending two clips.

Does the fade change the file length?

No, the length stays the same. Only the volume at the start and end changes.
