Metadata

Remove Metadata from Audio

Clear the descriptive data from audio files before sharing them. The sound itself is untouched.

or drop them here

MP3, M4A, FLAC, OGG, Opus, WAV and AIFF. Several files at once.. Files stay on your device.

How it works

  1. Choose one or more audio files.
  2. Check what will be removed from each.
  3. Click Remove metadata; the audio is copied without re-encoding.
  4. Check the verification, then download the clean files or a ZIP.

What is removed

Each file is checked first and the page shows how many tags, pictures and chapters it holds. Removing covers every descriptive tag type in the file:

  • MP3 and AAC: ID3v1, ID3v2 including private frames, APE tags and artwork.
  • M4A and M4B: iTunes atoms, user data, artwork and chapters.
  • FLAC, Ogg Vorbis and Opus: Vorbis comments and embedded pictures.
  • WAV: LIST/INFO, Broadcast Wave (bext), iXML, id3 chunks, cue points, sampler data and unknown chunks.
  • AIFF: name, author, copyright and annotation chunks, markers, instrument data and ID3 chunks.

What stays, and how it is checked

What the audio needs to play stays: codec parameters, sample rate, channel layout, duration and the seek index. The sound is copied without re-encoding, so quality is unchanged.

After each file is cleaned, the page reads the new file again and reports whether any tag, picture or chapter is left. If something remains you are told which tag type, instead of being assured it is clean.

What this does not do

This removes metadata; it does not anonymise the audio. A recording can still contain a recognisable voice, spoken names, background sounds or an inaudible watermark, and the file name is under your control. WMA, WebM, Matroska and MP4 files with video are not supported, because removing their metadata would mean rebuilding more than the tags.

Questions

Will removing metadata reduce the audio quality?

No. The audio is copied as it is and never decoded or re-encoded. Only the tag data is left out.

Can I clean many files at once?

Yes. Add as many files as you like, remove the metadata from all of them, and download the cleaned files one by one or as a ZIP. A file that cannot be processed fails on its own and does not stop the others.

Does it remove the cover art too?

Yes. Embedded pictures are tags like any other and are removed with them. To keep the cover and change other tags, use the tag editor; to change only the cover, use the album art tool.

Why did my player lose the track length or title?

Titles live in the tags, so they go. Duration is rebuilt from the audio itself and stays. Rename the cleaned file if the file name carried the information.

Are my files uploaded?

No. Every file is read and rewritten in your browser.
