AAC to MP3 Converter

Drop in AAC files and get MP3 back in seconds, processed entirely on your device.

or drop them here

AAC files (most other audio and video files work too). Files stay on your device.

How it works

  1. Choose your AAC file, or drop it on the page. You can add several files at once.
  2. Choose MP3 quality: a bitrate (128 to 320 kbps; 192 kbps is a common balance) or leave the default.
  3. Click Convert. Processing happens on your device and shows progress; you can cancel at any time.
  4. Preview the result and download the MP3 file. With several files, download them all as one ZIP.

About AAC to MP3 conversion

AAC (Advanced Audio Coding, raw ADTS stream) suits streaming-style files and hardware that expects a plain AAC stream. MP3 (MPEG-1/2 Audio Layer III) suits music libraries, podcasts and sharing when you cannot know what the listener uses.

Both formats are lossy, so converting re-encodes the audio and costs a little quality each time. Keep your AAC original, and choose a MP3 bitrate at least as high as the source for the best result.

For a 4-minute track, a typical AAC file is about 5 MB and a typical MP3 file is about 6 MB. Your own result depends on the bitrate and the audio itself.

AAC vs MP3

MP3 support: Plays on virtually every phone, car stereo, TV, browser and media player made in the last 25 years.

AAC support: The codec is everywhere. A bare .aac stream is less common than M4A and often lacks duration and tag information.

Quality and compatibility notes

  • MP3: Each re-encode loses a little more detail, and there is no true gapless support without extra tags.
  • AAC: A bare ADTS stream has no real tag container, so title, artist and cover art are usually missing.
  • MP3 bitrate range: 128 to 320 kbps; 192 kbps is a common balance.
  • Tags: MP3 stores ID3v1 and ID3v2 tags, including cover art.

Questions

Does converting AAC to MP3 reduce quality?

A little. Both AAC and MP3 are lossy, so converting re-encodes the audio. A high bitrate keeps the loss very small, and keeping your original avoids any permanent change.

How big will the MP3 file be?

For a 4-minute track, a typical AAC file is about 5 MB and a typical MP3 file is about 6 MB. Your own result depends on the bitrate and the audio itself.

Is my AAC file uploaded anywhere?

No. The conversion runs in your browser on your device. The file is never sent to a server, and nothing is stored after you close the page.
