MP3 to FLAC Converter

Drop in MP3 files and get FLAC back in seconds, processed entirely on your device.

or drop them here

MP3 files (most other audio and video files work too). Files stay on your device.

How it works

  1. Choose your MP3 file, or drop it on the page. You can add several files at once.
  2. Nothing to tune: FLAC is lossless, so the audio is preserved exactly.
  3. Click Convert. Processing happens on your device and shows progress; you can cancel at any time.
  4. Preview the result and download the FLAC file. With several files, download them all as one ZIP.

About MP3 to FLAC conversion

MP3 (MPEG-1/2 Audio Layer III) suits music libraries, podcasts and sharing when you cannot know what the listener uses. FLAC (Free Lossless Audio Codec) suits archiving a CD collection and keeping masters at about half the size of WAV.

MP3 is lossy, and no converter can restore detail that was already discarded. The FLAC file will sound the same as the MP3 source and will be larger; the point of the conversion is compatibility with software or hardware that needs FLAC.

For a 4-minute track, a typical MP3 file is about 6 MB and a typical FLAC file is about 24 MB. Your own result depends on the bitrate and the audio itself.

MP3 vs FLAC

FLAC support: Plays in all current browsers, Android, and most music apps. Apple added full system support in iOS 11 and macOS High Sierra.

MP3 support: Plays on virtually every phone, car stereo, TV, browser and media player made in the last 25 years.

Quality and compatibility notes

  • FLAC: Still several times larger than MP3 or AAC, and not every car stereo or older player supports it.
  • MP3: Each re-encode loses a little more detail, and there is no true gapless support without extra tags.
  • Tags: FLAC stores vorbis comments and embedded pictures.

Questions

Does converting MP3 to FLAC reduce quality?

No further loss happens, but none is recovered either: FLAC stores what the MP3 file already contained.

How big will the FLAC file be?

For a 4-minute track, a typical MP3 file is about 6 MB and a typical FLAC file is about 24 MB. Your own result depends on the bitrate and the audio itself.

Is my MP3 file uploaded anywhere?

No. The conversion runs in your browser on your device. The file is never sent to a server, and nothing is stored after you close the page.
